April 21st is National Canadian Film Day, a massive one-day, coast-to-coast celebration of Canadian cinema and a great day for film fanatics to celebrate the movies. While there is no shortage of ways to partake online, the event has us dreaming of the theatrical experience that many of these films were made for.
Lucky for us in Saskatchewan, while the pandemic may have put a damper on visits to the theatre, we still have several drive-ins operating that allow us to look forward to a fun night out this summer.
Saskatchewan’s newest permanent screen drive-in, these hearty business owners opened last summer and never closed. In the warmer months, they often have a food truck and pre-show entertainment. In the wintertime, its BYOS (Bring your own snacks).
The owners usually allow you to camp overnight if you can’t make the drive back home, but there is a quaint campground in Wolseley as well if you prefer. Be sure to arrive early enough for the pre-show cartoons and the owner’s signature “It’s Show, Show, Showtime!” announcement.
This one offers a similar getaway experience close to the suite of attractions that make up Moose Mountain provincial park. We like to stop at the waterslides and have been known to grab a cabin for the weekend.
There’s nothing like the view of the stars you’ll get at this theatre if you pause to look beyond the screen. Activities at nearby Saskatchewan Landing can easily round out a weekend for those who want to make the trip last a little longer.
This week I’m planning to celebrate @CanFilmDay with opening night at the Twilite. There’s a free showing of Sonic the Hedgehog, proudly filmed on Vancouver Island.
The best part of going to the drive-in? Movie popcorn with buttery topping available at most locations. 😊
